Finding Balance Between Light and Shadow
As a little girl, my grandmother used to tell me stories about kings, princesses, and brave heroes. There was always a good witch and a bad witch, and in the end, good always defeated evil.
As a child, I believed it completely.
As I grew older, life taught me something slightly different.
I began to realise that life is built on balance.
Without darkness, how would we recognise the light?
Without sadness, would we truly appreciate joy?
Without failure, would success mean anything at all?
The difficult moments of our lives often teach us to appreciate the beautiful ones more deeply.
Of course, none of us wishes for suffering. But perhaps both light and shadow help shape who we become.
Imagine spending the rest of your life on the most beautiful beach in the world.
At first, it would feel like paradise.
But after a while, you might begin to miss the ordinary things you once complained about—the changing seasons, your own home, even the familiar voices that sometimes annoyed you.
Or imagine that every person you ever met agreed with you, praised you, and never challenged you. Would you continue to grow? Perhaps not.
I believe life is not about choosing between good and bad. It is about learning how to remain balanced while experiencing both.
The same balance applies to the way we live. If we are always selfish, we push people away. But if we never set healthy boundaries and always put others first, we may lose ourselves and allow others to take advantage of us.
Kindness is beautiful. So are healthy boundaries. The challenge is learning when each is needed.
I often think about parenting. If one parent is always strict while the other never says no, children quickly learn how to play one against the other. But when both parents work together—with kindness, consistency, and balance—they create a safe place where children can learn and grow.
Perhaps life itself works in the same way. It is not trying to make us perfectly happy or perfectly comfortable. Perhaps it is simply teaching us to find balance between light and shadow, joy and sorrow, strength and gentleness.
And maybe that balance is where wisdom quietly begins.
"Life rarely asks us to choose between light and darkness. More often, it teaches us how to walk with both."
